They are made of plastic and are customized to fit the individual’s teeth. Retainers are important in maintaining the position of teeth and preventing relapse. However, retainers can become a breeding ground for bacteria and plaque if they not cleaned properly. In this blog post, we will discuss the do’s and don’ts of cleaning your orthodontic retainer.

Do’s for Cleaning your Retainer

Brush your retainer with a soft-bristle toothbrush and toothpaste twice daily. This will help remove plaque and bacteria from the surface of the retainer. It is important to use a soft-bristle toothbrush to avoid scratching the plastic and causing damage.

Soak your retainer in denture cleaner or a mixture of 1 part white vinegar and 2 parts water every few days to kill bacteria. This will help prevent the buildup of harmful microbes on your retainer. Make sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions for using denture cleaner.

Rinse your retainer thoroughly after brushing or soaking it, then dry it with a clean cloth before putting it back in your mouth or it’s case. This will keep moisture off the plastic material and reduce the risk of warping or discolouration over time.

Store your retainer in its case when not in use to protect it from dirt and dust. This will also help prevent damage to the plastic material if you accidentally drop it on a hard surface such as tile or concrete. This will also help you not to lose it!

Don’ts for Cleaning your Retainer

It is not recommended to use hot or boiling water for cleaning or soaking your retainer as it may cause warping and changes in its shape.
