Using an electric toothbrush significantly lowered plaque scores compared to the use of a manual brush. For those patients with good oral hygiene, the differences were neutralized.

A review of several studies of electric toothbrushes versus manual, showed an 11% reduction in plaque at one to three months for the electric toothbrushes and a 21% reduction in plaque after three months of use.

Advantages of an Electric Toothbrush

An electric toothbrush that oscillates can clean around the brackets and wires quicker than a manual toothbrush, taking less time to brush.

There is less effort required in using an electric toothbrush to get the same result with a regular toothbrush, especially for patients who don’t have ideal oral hygiene practices.

Electric toothbrushes also agitate the water in the mouth and plaque on the teeth in areas where the brush bristles may not have reached. This makes it easier for bacteria to be rinsed away with water.

Disadvantages of an Electric Toothbrush

Cost is the main disadvantage for using an electric toothbrush. The initial cost for an electric toothbrush is pricier than a manual brush, and new brush heads will need to be purchased. Brushing around braces tends to speed up the breakdown of the bristles and make the toothbrush less efficient, requiring more frequent replacement.

Electric toothbrushes also need to be recharged, or batteries replaced.

Advantages of a Manual Toothbrush

Manual toothbrushes are more cost effective than electric toothbrushes.

A manual toothbrush may be more convenient if you’re going away and don’t want to pack the charger for your electric toothbrush. While the charge lasts several days for most, taking an electric toothbrush on an extended trip could be a problem.

Disadvantages of a Manual Toothbrush

If you use a manual toothbrush, you should be someone who is vigilant about their oral hygiene. Not thoroughly brushing or rushing the job will result in increased levels of plaque and bacteria which can cause decay and staining.

Therefore, electric toothbrushes are the preferred tooth brush for people with braces. Although electric toothbrushes can be pricier, there is a wide range of brands and types of brushes to choose from.
