It is recommended that children have an orthodontic evaluation no later than the age of 7.
Around age 7, children have a mix of baby and permanent teeth. A check-up at this age gives the orthodontist a wealth of information. If a problem exists, or if one is developing, they are able to advise you on whether treatment is recommended, when it should begin, what form treatment will take, and its estimated length.
Some problems that can occur with a child’s teeth are:
- Abnormal Eruptions – when a tooth starts emerging through the gum in the wrong place.
- Crowding
- Crossbite
- Too Much Space
- Underbites
- Overbites
- Overjet (protrusion)
- Open bite

Some children who require early orthodontic treatment may still need braces later in life. However, the amount of time in braces may be significantly less if early treatment has occurred.
Early treatment may also prevent more serious problems from developing and may make treatment at a later age shorter and less complicated. Your child may also possibly avoiding invasive treatment measures, such as tooth extraction and surgery.
If there are no current issues or problems identified at your initial appointment, then a follow-up visit is usually scheduled a year or two later. This visit is also important, as it verifies the teeth and jaw are continuing to develop correctly.
Through an early orthodontic evaluation, you’ll be giving your child the best opportunity for a healthy, beautiful smile!
