Saskatoon – Stephenson Orthodontics
Braces are sensitive to damage, so you’ll need to make some adjustments to your diet by avoiding certain foods for as long as you wear them. The omission of these foods is temporary – so don’t worry, you will be back to eating them when your treatment is complete!
If you eat the wrong types of food and don’t maintain good dental hygiene, there is a risk of damaging your braces and teeth. Damaging your braces can prolong your treatment, and you may end up having to wear your braces for a longer period of time.
Foods to avoid include sticky and hard foods that can damage the wires or bands, or even cause a bracket to separate from a tooth.
Here is are some examples of foods to avoid with braces:
- Chewy foods: bagels or other hard rolls
- Crunchy foods: crunchy vegetables and fruits, hard chips, granola
- Sticky foods: caramel or sticky candies (such as licorice and gummies), chewing gum
- Hard foods: nuts, hard candy, popcorn, ice
- Foods that require biting into: corn on the cob, apples, carrots (you can still eat these foods but make sure to cut them up first)
While you are going through treatment, it is still very important to maintain a healthy diet and make sure you are eating nutritious food.
Here are some examples of foods that are safe to eat with braces:
- Dairy: soft cheese, pudding, yogurt, milk-based drinks
- Breads: soft tortillas, pancakes, muffins without nuts
- Grains: pasta, soft cooked rice, oatmeal, soup
- Meats/poultry: soft cooked chicken, meatballs, lunch meats, scrambled eggs
- Seafood: tuna, salmon, crab cakes
- Vegetables: mashed potatoes, steamed vegetables, beans, cucumbers
- Fruits: applesauce, bananas, cut up apples, oranges, kiwi fruit, berries, smoothies
- Treats: ice cream without nuts, milkshakes, Jell-O, soft cake

Eating a well balanced diet, maintaining good dental habits and avoiding damaging foods while wearing your braces will ensure your treatment goes as planned!
