Orthodontic retainers are essential in keeping your teeth in place after braces have been removed. They are made of plastic and are customized to fit the individual’s teeth. Retainers are important in maintaining the position of teeth and preventing relapse. However, retainers can become a breeding ground for bacteria and plaque if they not cleaned properly. In this blog post, we will discuss the do’s and don’ts of cleaning your orthodontic retainer.
Do’s for Cleaning your Retainer
- Brush your retainer with a soft-bristle toothbrush and toothpaste twice daily. This will help remove plaque and bacteria from the surface of the retainer. It is important to use a soft-bristle toothbrush to avoid scratching the plastic and causing damage.
- Soak your retainer in denture cleaner or a mixture of 1 part white vinegar and 2 parts water every few days to kill bacteria. This will help prevent the buildup of harmful microbes on your retainer. Make sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions for using denture cleaner.
- Rinse your retainer thoroughly after brushing or soaking it, then dry it with a clean cloth before putting it back in your mouth or it’s case. This will keep moisture off the plastic material and reduce the risk of warping or discolouration over time.
- Store your retainer in its case when not in use to protect it from dirt and dust. This will also help prevent damage to the plastic material if you accidentally drop it on a hard surface such as tile or concrete. This will also help you not to lose it!

Don’ts for Cleaning your Retainer
- It is not recommended to use hot or boiling water for cleaning or soaking your retainer as it may cause warping and changes in its shape. This can affect the fit of the retainer on your teeth.
- Don’t use abrasive materials such as toothpicks, scouring pads, or metal brushes as these can scratch the plastic material and cause damage over time.
- Don’t put your retainer in the dishwasher or washing machine, as this can cause discolouration and melting of the plastic. As well, the high temperature can damage the fit of the retainer.
- Don’t forget to brush your teeth before putting your retainer back in your mouth. This will help prevent the buildup of food debris and bacteria in your mouth, which can transfer to your retainer.
- Don’t use hot water when cleaning your retainer as this can cause it to warp.
- Don’t use harsh chemicals such as bleach on your retainer as this can cause damage to the plastic material.
- Don’t leave your retainer in direct sunlight as this can also cause warping or discolouration.

Cleaning your orthodontic retainer is important to maintaining good oral hygiene and preventing the buildup of harmful bacteria. By following the do’s and don’ts outlined in this blog post, you can ensure that your retainer lasts longer and fits properly on your teeth. Remember to brush your retainer with a soft-bristle toothbrush and toothpaste, soak it in a denture cleaner or vinegar solution, rinse and dry it before storing in its case when not in use. And most importantly, avoid using hot water, abrasive materials, or harsh chemicals to clean your retainer. Happy cleaning!
